What It Takes to Be Certified by Volvo

Plenty of used cars get called certified. Certified by Volvo has a narrower meaning. Volvo sets the standards for age, mileage and condition, Certified Volvo Technicians handle the inspection and reconditioning, and only an authorized Volvo dealer can put the name on the car.

For Ocala drivers, the warranty is the part that fits local life. A week in Marion County can mean school runs, a trip up I-75 to Gainesville and a long day at a horse show, and miles add up fast. During the 12 months of certified coverage, the odometer isn't the limit.1

The Certified by Volvo Warranty and When It Starts

Certified by Volvo adds a 12-month, unlimited-mile factory-backed warranty, and when it starts depends on the Basic Warranty.1 If the original 4-year/50,000-mile Basic Warranty still has time on it, the 12 months begin when that warranty ends. If it has already ended, the 12 months run from the day you buy the car.

Volvo describes it as factory-backed coverage on thousands of components, systems and operations, and says it can help cover repair or replacement of defective components in the engine, transmission, front and rear drive axles, steering, suspension, brakes, electrical and air conditioning systems. There's no deductible, repairs use Volvo Genuine Parts, and the warranty transfers to a later owner at no cost.

What is Certified by Volvo?

It's the certified pre-owned program from Volvo. Vehicles must meet standards for age, mileage and condition, pass a 170+ point inspection and road test, and be certified by an authorized Volvo dealer.

How long does the Certified by Volvo warranty last?

It lasts 12 months with unlimited mileage. The 12 months start when the 4-year/50,000-mile new-vehicle Basic Warranty expires, or on your purchase date if it already has.

What if the new-vehicle warranty has already expired?

Then the 12 months start on the date you buy the car, so you still get the full certified term.

Is there a mileage limit?

A car needs to be under 80,000 miles to be certified. Once a car is certified, the warranty has no mileage cap during its 12 months.

Can I extend the coverage?

Yes. You can purchase a Volvo Increased Protection plan through an authorized Volvo dealer for up to 5 more years, with unlimited-mile options. What's available depends on the age, mileage and model of the car, and a deductible may apply.

Does the warranty transfer if I sell the car?

Yes. Volvo says that once a car is certified, the designation stays with it, and the warranty is fully transferable to the new owner at no charge for the remainder of its term.

Does roadside help end when the warranty does?

Not entirely. Roadside Assistance Plus runs through any remaining new-vehicle warranty and the certified warranty. Volvo says the car is still eligible after that for Volvo Roadside Assistance, which is towing only: no cost for the first 25 miles of a tow to an authorized Volvo dealer after a breakdown or to a Certified Collision Center after an accident, with an overage fee beyond that. Other roadside services and trip interruption end with Roadside Assistance Plus unless you have a Volvo Increased Protection plan, which includes it, or buy the paid Plus membership Volvo offers.

How does the battery warranty work on a certified plug-in hybrid?

Every new fully electric and plug-in hybrid Volvo comes with an 8-year/100,000-mile high-voltage battery warranty, whichever comes first. Any remaining coverage continues when the car is sold as Certified by Volvo.

Volvo Roadside Assistance Plus is included for the period of the vehicle warranty, including any remaining new-vehicle warranty and the Certified by Volvo limited warranty, and provides 24/7 help. It includes complimentary towing to the nearest Volvo Cars authorized retailer after a mechanical disablement, and a tow to a Volvo Certified Collision Center for up to 25 miles after a traffic accident. Roadside services include gas delivery, flat tire changes, battery jumps, lockout help and winching. It is meant for emergency situations, not repeated calls for routine maintenance, snow removal or snow tire changes. It does not cover vehicle storage charges, parts and installation, products, materials or impounding/tow fees. Trip interruption benefits apply to warranty-related disablements beyond a set distance from your primary residence and cover expenses such as meals, lodging, car rental and commercial transportation, subject to Volvo's limits. After the warranty has expired, the vehicle is still eligible for Volvo Roadside Assistance, which is limited to towing: no cost for the first 25 miles of a tow to an authorized Volvo Cars retailer after a mechanical or electrical breakdown, or to an authorized Certified Collision Center after an accident, with an overage fee beyond the first 25 miles. Roadside Assistance Plus is available as a paid membership after that, with its own towing, service and trip interruption limits.

  4. 4. Volvo Increased Protection (VIP) plans are optional service contracts, sold separately from the Certified by Volvo warranty. Coverage level availability may be limited based on the age, mileage, make and model of the vehicle. Deductible may apply. Some plans may include rental car, towing and travel coverages.   5. 5. The CARFAX Buyback Guarantee helps protect you from unknowingly buying a used car with a DMV-reported incident (salvage, fire, flood damage, odometer problems or lemon history).
