Owning a Volvo car is an exciting experience, and sometimes there are slight inconveniences like having a flat tire. Our Volvo service experts can help prevent breakdowns as our certified mechanics check for minor issues before they become major problems. However, unfortunate events can happen, and you can use our step-by-step guide on how to change a flat tire in case of an emergency.
Have the Necessary Tools
To begin the process of changing a flat tire, you have to have the necessary tools in your trunk or cargo area:
- Car manual
- Car jack
- Lug wrench
- Spare tire
- Wheel wedges (optional)
How to Change a Flat Tire
Once you have pulled over to a safe space, put your hazard lights on and gather all of your tools to begin changing your flat tire. If you have wheel wedges, place them behind the wheels that are not affected.
- Begin by loosening your lug nuts on the flat tire but do not remove them completely.
- Place the car jack under a solid metal part of the car’s frame by the flat tire, then raise the tire about six inches off the ground.
- Once the car is raised off of the ground, begin removing the lug nuts with the lug wrench, and stow them in a safe place.
- Place the spare tire on the wheel studs, gather your lug nuts, and begin tightening them by hand until they are secure but not completely tight.
- Lower the jack so the car returns to the ground, then tighten the lug nuts with the wrench. Do not remove the jack until you ensure the car is stable and the lug nuts are fully tightened.
- After the car has been lowered and the lug nuts are tightened, remove the jack. Double-check to make sure the lug nuts are properly tight and secure. Return your tools and flat tire to your trunk or cargo area.
